Motorola's Wireless Mesh WAN Solution Helps City's Public Safety Officials Crack Down on Local Gang Activity while Offering Free Citywide Wi-Fi Access to Businesses and Residents
The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced that NetLogix, a leading national wireless and video systems integrator and member of Motorola's wireless broadband channel program, has deployed Motorola's mesh wide area network (MWAN) solution for the City of Maywood, Calif. The solution consists of Motorola's MWAN 4300 nodes and will help the city's law enforcement officers better protect the public while also allowing Maywood to provide citywide free high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access to businesses and residents.
"The deployment of Maywood's citywide mesh network shows how cities like ours can leverage the power of a single wireless broadband network for official business and public access," said Thomas Martin, City Councilman for the City of Maywood, Calif. "The digital divide in Maywood is one step closer to being something of the past, and we look forward to the city-wide Wi-Fi helping our young people and families in the future."
Stimulating new business development while ensuring public safety, especially during the current downturn in the economy, is top of mind for many municipalities across the country. The City of Maywood is no exception and its officials quickly saw that a citywide mesh network could meet both of these needs, allowing the city to leverage the power of broadband connectivity to run many different applications. The high data transfer capacity of the network allows the city to offer free high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity to attract new businesses and help its citizens cross the digital divide. At the same time, the Maywood Police Department will be taking advantage of the network for video surveillance to deter criminal activity, help its officers respond to incidents more quickly, and provide better situational awareness. In addition, Maywood and NetLogix are already looking to collaborate with application developers to introduce new solutions that could be supported by this network, including mobile data access for police cars.
"The City of Maywood is a prime example of a successful approach to municipal wireless," said Eric DaVersa, vice president of business development, NetLogix. "The network delivers on what President Obama's Recovery and Reinvestment Act is striving to achieve by stimulating economic development through free business and residential broadband Internet access while delivering secure and reliable public safety networking and communications."
The solution deployed in Maywood consists of Motorola's MWAN 4300 nodes that run a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radio (802.11 b/g) for client access and node-to-node mesh links, and an additional 4.9 GHz licensed band (802.11a) radio for public safety applications like video surveillance. The MWAN 4300 nodes leverage Motorola's field proven MeshConnex™ routing engine, creating a highly reliable self-forming, self-healing wireless broadband network that blankets the city. NetLogix also used Motorola's MeshPlanner to design the network, ensuring quick deployment with maximum performance throughout the coverage area.
"Motorola's mesh networking solution for Maywood demonstrates that wireless broadband networks can be deployed quickly and serve as a cost-effective alternative to wired infrastructure solutions, which require monthly leasing fees and are costly to deploy in densely populated urban environments," said Chip Yager, director of operations, Motorola's Mesh Networks Product Group. "By using Motorola's proven mesh technology, cities like Maywood can stimulate economic development, advance opportunities in education and help to improve the standard of living for their residents."
